This was a pleasant read. A light mystery set in the mid 1950s. It has a number of noir elements. The characters, in particular Martina, are appealing. The events and the flow keep the reading engaging.
This is the type of book best read to relax on a nice spring day.
Because it is set in the 1950s, my stupid brain kept screaming at me "Look for something wrong! Is this an anachronism??? When was Old Spice invented??? What about this other thing?!?"
Fortunately for me, I successfully tuned that off and trusted that J.R. Wright did all his research. -)
This probably happened because the more revealing sexual attitudes of the characters in the book have much more in common with Mad Men than with Leave it to Beaver. Even when I watch Mad Men, my brain does that to me. Bad brain! -)
I will be reading Spider's next adventure.
Overall, the story was good, but there were too many places where "glared" was incorrectly used, and it negatively impacted the story. It would have changed the meaning had I not disregarded the word usage. I would recommend an editor before publishing the next book.

This is well written and the action keeps it going. I could hardly stop for meals and life. Thank you.
Overall the story was ok. However there were things that I didn't gel with. One, is the emphasis placed on Martina wanting to end her virginity. As one who has friends that lived in the fifties, people in general, didn't think like that and they didn't go out of their way to find anyone to have sex with either. Secondly, the use of a** wasn't used either in every day language. That came later on like during the seventies. Oh and Martina's use of a gun, is not even believable for how her character is described let alone for women during that time period.
In my opinion there seemed to be too much modern day additives and not much 1950's authenticity.
This did not draw me in the way I hoped that it would. I think more research would have helped.
But I did like Martina, Parker, Gloria, and Dunbar. They were fully fleshed out. I hope that the rest of the series is better, but I am a little gun-shy (no pun intended) to read them.
Question Why is it nowadays, that virginity is viewed as a disease or something trivial to be rid of instead of the precious gift that it really is?
